Alright, let's face it, I bet you have never seen Mirrormask (WTG if you have!). It's possibly my favorite movie, at least top five!! Every time I watch it, I find something new I love about it, or little details I didn't notice before. It's visually striking, witty, dark and full of imagination.
It came out in 2005 and was Written and Directed by Dave McKean (Was the conceptual artist for Harry Potter and The Prisoner of Azcaban) so you know it looks amazing! Neil Gaiman was the other writer for this movie (Wrote the book Coraline and the Movie Beowulf) which is why it's so imaginative. These two men made this movie into something visually striking and captures your heart with the story at the same time.
I don't want to spoil it for those of you who have not seen it, so here is a short discription:
*A fifteen year old girl named Helena (Stephanie Leonidas) wishes to leave her "life" of the Circus with her family and join "real Life". To her surprise she ends up in an odd world and must travel into the into the Dark Lands to find the fabled Mirrormask to get back home. She meets odd characters and creatures like Valentine (Jason Berr) who helps her in the search. Helena has to face the Queen of Shadows (Gina McKee) and try to save the Queen of Light (Gina McKee).
I think why I love this movie so much is because it reminds me of myself. Weird huh? I often want to live a different life, or join "real life", whatever that is. This movie always puts me in check if I feel out of it and reminds me of my reality. I know I can't have a different life, so I try to make it into what I want and to never take it for granted. If you have not seen Mirrormask, I highly recommend it! It's not for everyone though, so don't blame me if you don't like it! Haha.
